MG Storage to the Rescue…or “Confessions of a Decluttering Duo and the Team That Saved Us”

Spring cleaning—a time for renewal, decluttering, and the pursuit of minimalism. As a married couple, we decided to tackle this challenge together…. because what project isn’t immediately improved by the long-cherished marital traditions of side-eye and dubious encouragement? Employing “foolproof” methods plucked from the pages of my wife’s favorite magazines, we embarked on our mission to purge our home of unnecessary items. The problem? We quickly discovered that EVERYTHING held value for one or both of us. Our dream of a perfectly organized home led us to the team at MG Storage, and a perfect solution for every situation. Here’s how our attempt at minimalist perfection turned into a storage unit adventure.
With enthusiasm and a misguided belief that we could let go of things, we began evaluating our possessions with full confidence in our ability to be ruthless. We asked each item if it truly deserved a place in our lives. Spoiler alert: it all did. My collection of vintage vinyl records? Joy. Her assortment of shot glasses pilfered from all the stops along that college road trip? SO much joy. The matching sequined blazers from a theme party in 2012? Ridiculous joy (I cried). Our vision of a minimalist sanctuary quickly crumbled.
As our carefully curated piles of “Keep” and “Definitely Keep” expanded, so did our anxiety. No one warned us about the dangers of mutual attachment to our belongings. By the time we reached our collection of artisanal olive oils (yes, we have a collection), we realized we had a problem. Our home was overflowing—not with clutter, but with cherished possessions we both refused to part with. If we couldn’t part with our beloved items, we needed a new solution.
Our lightbulb moment came when we realized that we don’t have a clutter problem. We are simply a pair of organizationally challenged collectors with a space problem. We had to get strategic. We thought about a storage unit…but we both immediately conjured images of abandoned treasures in a dusty unit that is one mere bolt cutter away from being plundered. We knew we would be circulating items in/out of the unit regularly and wanted to feel welcome and secure when we visited, not like we were walking dimly lit alleyways of musty mothball smell. Plus – throwing away cash by renting a subpar “settled for” solution was a non-starter.
Enter: the storage condo — a second home for all the things that bring us joy but no longer fit in our living space. Think climate-controlled rooms, security cameras, and a team that safeguards our belongings with the respect (and not judgment) they deserve.
Our approach, which we are custom-designing with the team at MG, will include:
- His & Hers closets and shelving units for our ‘seasonal’ wardrobe (which is just code for ‘We might wear this someday’).
- A custom cabinet for our whiskey collection because whiskey, like joy, must be preserved. Can I help it if the cigar humidor just made sense after we customized the whiskey storage?
- A corner dedicated to displaying sentimental objects that we might (but probably won’t) part with someday.
Our MG storage space is a real estate investment. We are building equity while curating a museum of our personal aesthetic – a time capsule of past and future fabulousness. We’re even considering pre-ordering additional units that can be rented out for off-season boat and RV storage to offset our investment cost.
Decluttering isn’t for everyone. Some of us find joy in everything, and that’s okay. The key is not to fight it but to embrace it—strategically. So, if you’re like us and have found that your carefully cultivated collections are outgrowing your living space, don’t despair. Talk to the team at MG about how they can help upgrade your storage game. After all, life’s too short to say goodbye to things that make you happy.
